Don’t let old bread go to waste, turn it into garlicky, buttery croutons! Croutons aren’t just for salads, they’re the perfect addition to a soup, adding both texture and flavor.
I prefer using chives, but you can really add any herbs you have on hand. The preparation is so easy, and your house will smell so good in the process, that once you make your own croutons you’ll be hard pressed to buy ones off the shelves again.
- ½ loaf of stale Italian or French bread
- 4 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tbsp chives or other fresh herbs
- 3 cloves minced garlic
- Salt and pepper
Preheat the oven to 250F. Mix the butter, garlic, and herbs in a bowl. Cut up the bread into ¾ inch pieces. Spread over a large pan. Drizzle the melted herb butter over the bread and toss, trying to spread the mixture evenly over the bread. Add salt and pepper to taste. Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly browned and dry.
